An interview with Simona Nicolosi
If you are from Milan, you've probably come across the jewelry designer's profile on social media. The 52-year-old influencer, always full of life and energy, shares her passion for beauty on her instagram channel and brings us around Italy and beyond to discover exhibitions, behind the scenes content and insider tips about all things jewelry-related. 12 years ago, she dropped everything to create her brand, which name comes from her nickname as a child, Moma.
After years of friendship between Simona and Maud, our founder, they decided to design the first may mOma x Instance piece of jewelry: the gOlden earrings. Let us present you our beloved Simona and enter with us her fascinating world.
When did you first realise you wanted to pursue a career as a jewelry designer?
My motto is “ if you really want to do something you’ll find a way, if not you’ll find an excuse”. When I was 40 I was a communication manager in a company and I decided to leave everything and follow my passion. I decided to go back to school to study jewelry design and afterwords I created my company may mOma.
What is the best thing about your job?
Exploring my creativity. To me creativity is a basket full of all the experiences I have collected around the world over the years. Throughout exotic travels, in the faces of people I've met, in art, in mountain landscapes, in sunsets at the sea. When you draw you feel all these things at the tip of your pencil. Hands do not follow precise thoughts. The hand slides the pencil on the paper waiting for one of these beautiful things you have seen to come out in something that surprises you.

If you could choose 3 words to describe the jewellery you create what would they be?
Feminine, sophisticated, with a milanese touch.
What was your biggest fear when starting may mOma?
From the very start I was crazy enough to believe so much in my vision in jewelry that it made me overcome all my practical fears. I wanted to use jewels to carry emotions, stories, human feelings.
What do you want women to feel when wearing your jewelry?
To feel how strong they are. Because they wear a jewel that is hand made in Italy, and each piece is slightly different from the other. To me it’s a real tribute to how unique they are.
What is the collection you are the most proud of?
The Eldorado collection. Thanks to the sensual cascade of gold fringes each piece follows and emphasizes the harmonious lines and movements of the body.It’s the most feminine and seductive collection. When a woman wears it your gaze will immediately be attracted to the fringes that touch the skin.
How did the collaboration with Instance come to exist and what was the inspiration being the gOlden earrings?
Maud and I went at Euripide7, a milanese art gallery, for the presentation of a piece of art of Lucio Fontana that had been hidden for so many years. It’s a mosaic with white and gold tassels that surround a mirror. The presence of gold has inspired us to create a pair of gOlden Earrings. Hoop earrings in which you can put pearls or pearls with a gold brush stroke. Every pearls is different from the other and the way you wear the earrings can be different. The idea of uniqueness has been the leitmotiv behind the creation of gOlden earrings.

What is the best thing about your job?
I work with beauty. Being immersed in beauty is something really special.
